Concentrate on Certain Skills in the Beginning
I was asked by a few white belts recently what to focus on in the beginning of training Jiu Jitsu. For me, the biggest thing to work on as a new student is defense and escapes. When training with experienced white belts or higher belts you are going to be spending some time in survival mode. People are going to be trying to improve their position on you and throwing submissions at you on a regular basis. You will be uncomfortable on the bottom, but that’s okay! It is a situation you can turn it into a positive. It’s the perfect time to work on your defensive techniques and escapes. Of course, you need to learn some of all aspects of Jiu Jitsu, but I feel the best starting point for your training is a base in defense. The best offense starts with a good defense.
