I Can’t Remember Anything!
As a newer student, when it comes to open rolling, it can be difficult to recall any technique when you are trying to train. The biggest factor here, because you are not used to rolling yet, is the adrenaline that’s released in your body as you train. With the adrenaline dump, your body tenses up and so does your mind. You begin to narrow your focus, missing things you would normally see or would forget techniques in the moment. There’s nothing wrong with this initial problem when starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Everyone has gone through the process of getting acclimated to the sport when they first start training. The biggest advice I can give here is breathe. Take in and blow out deep, calming breathes when it’s time to start and during rolling whenever you can. You’d be surprised how much breathing is linked to being in and handling a combat situation. If you feel yourself start to tense up, take a second to breathe. A second reason it maybe hard to remember things is too much choice. If you are someone that loves collecting a ton of moves, be careful that you don’t overload yourself. The best strategy for someone starting out is to pick two techniques from every position and drill them until they are muscle memory. This will help with your timing and help not overwhelm your mind when the time comes while rolling.
