Know Your Surroundings on the Street
Learning self-defense and being able to apply it on the street is important. It allows all of us who train the peace of mind that we can protect ourselves if a physical altercation should arise. First and foremost, you should always avoid altercations because the outcome could be catastrophic to your life. These are circumstances that can lead to legal action or getting hurt. If you’re in a situation that you must defend yourself, it’s important to know what your surroundings are. How many attackers are involved? Is there a crowd? Do I take it the ground? Where are my exits? These kinds of questions you ask yourself in the moment could save your life. There was a situation this Black Friday where two girls were fighting over a hoverboard one girl pushed the other down. The one that was pushed tried to throw on a triangle choke in the busy aisle way. With this being a crowded area and many items were around this could have been disastrous for her. Because the merchandise and the crowd around her she was out of position for the choke and couldn’t finish it. Also, outside of the circle that formed, everyone was running around, she’s lucky she wasn’t trampled in madness of Black Friday. The lesson here is, don’t fight over trivial things and if a situation does occur don’t be afraid to run. It is the best option in that situation. If you can’t run, make sure you pay attention to where you are and what’s going on around you to help you in the altercation.
