Learn to Overcome the Uncomfortable
In Jiu Jitsu, becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable is essential to grow in the martial art. What I’m talking about is at the start of a roll you easily get in a rhythm with your “A” game during your training when everything is going your way. You’re hitting all your techniques perfectly, but suddenly, your opponent does something unconventional and it knocks you out of that rhythm. You might end up in a bad spot and get stuck because you don’t know how to get out of that situation. Getting smashed or being on the wrong end of a submission attempt is never fun, but there is a big plus side in being comfortable here. Not panicking and being able to slow things down in your mind will help you formulate a reliable strategy to recover to a better position. A good way to maintain calmness is how you control your breathe. Breathing has a big impact on your mental state while training and if you can maintain a calm breathing pattern it can help keep your mind focused on the task at hand. Using the mentality of “comfortable in the uncomfortable” can help you at work, your home life, or other hobbies you’re involved in. Don’t be discouraged if you are stuck in a bad spot and get caught. There is plenty of time to increase your mental toughness and get better for the future.
