What to Bring Your First Day of Class
First and foremost, I would like to congratulate you on taking the leaping and starting your Jiu Jitsu journey. Whether you started for self-defense, to get in shape, or just because your friend who trains dragged you along, it’s the first step to achieving your black belt. Starting anything new can sometimes be paralyzing if you aren’t sure what to bring for your first class. Here is a small list of some essentials for your first day:
Most gyms won’t expect you to show up on your first day in a brand new $200 gi, but it’s important to know what you should wear to get the best experience. I’d recommend a tight breathable shirt, similar to under armor, and athletic shorts. Avoid loose fitting clothes, denim, or clothes with holes or pockets. Second, bring water with you. We have water fountains at our gym, but not all do. If you are afraid of germs bring your own water to keep you hydrated. Third, bring a pair of flip flops. We never wear shoes on the mat because our shoes bring foreign bacteria that we don’t want getting on the mat. This can lead to staph infections or ringworm, which none of us want. If you need to get on and off the mat, always have flip flops available to make it easy for yourself. Lastly, don’t forget a positive mindset. Jiu Jitsu is tough and coming in leaving your ego at the door and ready to learn will have a huge positive impact to your overall experience. Knowing you are the newest person with the least amount of knowledge can be a difficult thing to come to terms with. The thing to remember, is that we all started that way and if you can stick with it your skills will come into their own with time.
